I really cannot take any credit for this hat. My Uncle Bart, the comic book dork, made a request for a Dr. Manhattan hat, that I proceeded to make with my horrid intarsia skills (see photo below). Luckily he loved it, and so did all of his comic-booky buddies. After that he was the one that came up with the idea of a yellow hat with the Comedian's Smiley Face w/ the bullet, so I decided to try it out and surprise him with a little package in the mail.
Assuming there are other knitters with comic book dorks in their family, I have posted it here for you. Don't sue me Watchmen people - we're not selling it, just giving you more free advertising with our hand knits.
It is a basic knit hat pattern, and then the smiley face is embroidered on. Don't fret people, I can't embroider at all - I just started sewing in there till it looked right. I have posted pics of the back side of the hat so you can see that this takes no actual embroidery skills.
- 1 skein Yellow Worsted Weight Yarn (I used Vanna's Choice Baby in #157 Duckie cuz the color was perfect)
- Scraps of red and black yarn for face
- size 6 16" circular
- size 7 16" circular
- size 6 16" double points, or size 6 40" circular for magic loop method (I did the top in magic loop)
Tapestry needles for weaving in ends and embroidering face
Stitch Markers - optional, but make the decreases easy - no counting!
Size: Adult size head approx. 23". To make smaller version cast on (72), medium (84). I cast on 96 for this one - Bart has a large cranium.
Cast on 96 stitches with smaller needle. Join to knit in the round. Place marker at beginning of round.
- K2 P2 Rib for 1".
- Knit until hat is 4 1/2" long including ribbing. (You can make this smaller or larger depending on your head size.)
Row 1: *K12 & Place Marker. Repeat from * until end of round.
Row 2: *K until 2 stitches before marker, K2Tog; repeat from * until end of round
Row 3: Knit round
Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until you have 24 stitches left on needles. Switch to the size 6 dbl points or longer circular when you can no longer knit on the 16".
Repeat Row 2 until you have 8 stitches left on needles.
Cut Yarn, weave through remaining 8 stitches and weave in ends.
Basically all you do here is draw the smiley face on with your black yarn and needles. Hey - it's a hat - it will look cool no matter what. After that do the same with with the red to make the blood (ick) part.
Now sit back and revel in your coolness in the world of comic book dorks!
