This bag idea came from the fact that I hate to sew in liners to bags I knit, and that I have at least 10 projects going at one time (attention span issues) and am constantly looking for a bag to throw my project in. The only sewing on this one is a quick whip stitch at the bottom of the bag, and a few stitches at the top of the strap.
Yarn, gauge, measurements & needles sizes do not really matter - just make sure you are using a small enough needle in ratio to your yarn that the stitches are close enough together so that you do not need to line it. It seems tight at first, but you get used to it. Make the bag and strap any size you want.
Yarn: Super Bulky - I used Lion Brand Jiffy Thick & Quick, Color: Sierra Summer
Needles: 29" Circular Use 1 or 2 sizes smaller than the yarn calls for. My yarn called for 17's, so I used 15's.
Notions: 2 Stitch Holders.
CO 80 Stitches
Join yarn to begin knitting tube. Continue knitting until the base of the bag is as big as you wish your bag to be. Mine is approx. 16" high. *Using the Knit stitch in the round will actually create the stockinette stitch! No pesky purling required!
Bind off 32 stitches, put next 8 stitches on holder, bind of next 32 stitches.
8 Stitches remain on needle.
Knit these 8 stitches for 24". Put stitches on holder.
Take stitches from the other hold, join yarn and knit until this side of strap is 24".
Join the 2 ends of the straps in either 3 needle bind off or just sew them up with whip stitch.
Sew up the bottom of the bag with whip stitch.
